“Cardinal”
Imara & The Voice

the overview

A homecoming song, filmed at the festival that raised the band. “Cardinal” is about returning — so we shot Imara & The Voice on the outdoor stage where they played their first twenty-person set.

Daylight was the antagonist: a song this red needed night. We built the schedule backwards from sunset, rehearsed the band through the afternoon glare, and rolled four cameras for the 40 minutes when the sky finally cooperated. The fireworks in the finale are the festival's own closing display — timed, bribed, and worth it.

The night exteriors were picked up a week later across the river, guerrilla-style, with permission secured approximately one hour before each setup.

the approach

  1. 01 — Schedule from the sunset backwards. The money shot needed dusk. Everything else — rehearsals, coverage, food — orbited that 40-minute window.
  2. 02 — Four cameras, one chance. A live festival set happens once. Redundancy isn't luxury here; it's the whole plan.
  3. 03 — Steal the city's lights. Night exteriors with available light only — skyline spill, street sodium, shop windows. No trucks, no permits drama.
